Before you come

Meeting point

The meeting point during the snowy period is our winter starting place at Kätkäjärvi (address: Kätkäjärventie 407, Sirkka). If navigating yourselves, use Google maps (not Garmin or iPhone). You can get here by taxi or your car from Levi center, it will take approximately 15 minutes. Try to come some 5 minutes before the tour starts at most. There is no warm waiting room as we are in the middle of nowhere, so come with proper winter gear on. It is useful to know that the parking lot is not equipped with toilet facilities. Once we reach Wolf Lake area, there are plenty of dry toilets as the place is not electrified. To reach the meeing point you will be using a private road  (with no entry sign) so make sure to book before coming. For our pre-booked guests the parking is allowed and free of charge.

During the no snow season (June-October) the meeting points are typically something else, but you will be informed of the exact meeting point and how to get there if needed depending on the booked content.

We created the diagram below to help our winter and spring guests understand how the most typical tours are organized, where they can expect to feel chillly and where one can get warm and melt the toes and fingers. This is very important especially for families with children. The house (number 5) is where one can enjoy auxiliary snacks of their own on a Arctic outdoor day in our wilderness.

  1. Reindeer ride
  2. Warming up
  3. Ice fishing
  4. Snowshoeing
  5. Lunch
  6. Return reindeer ride

Your day at Wolf Lake

This is how you will spend your day outdoors in the middle of nowhere if you book reindeer- ice fishing- snowshoeing and salmon soup lunch tour. Come prepared with winter gear on and spare socks and mittens at least for the children on you. Next time you will get back to the parking place is in 4-5 hours. Some like to take a small snack with them for the children to eat inside before ice fishing (number 2 in the picture). Lunch will be served after ice fishing and snowshoeing, perhaps even with grilled rainbow trout if lucky. The warm moments will be your car/taxi trip from Levi to our starting place (remember to pre-heat your car if with children), warming up after the reindeer ride (possible snack time for your children or yourself), snowshoeing, if you walk fast enough, and lunch. Reindeer ride with driving instructions and later feeding the reindeer, ice fishing and reindeer ride back are static and not warm. Some people use hand and foot warmers in the coldest periods. Come prepared to enjoy the outdoors. You can hang around by the fire once we reach Wolf Lake, but wilderness is charming.

HOW TO FIND US

We are in Google Places, so the best is to use Google Maps. Avoid Garmin and iPhone, as they cannot find the right turn from the main road! Your human navigator can use these instructions in writing, many have found them helpful.

Driving instructions from Levi:

Drive south in direction of Kittilä and Rovaniemi. When Levi street lights disappear and you pass under the blue bridge saying Good bye and See you again take the first turn to the right at the sign “Kätkäjärventie” (road to Wolverine lake). The sign can be covered by snow in winter. The turn comes quickly, no more than 700 meters after the bridge.
Then follow Kätkäjärventie road for approximately 4,25 km until you see a sign Reindeer farm and a wooden number 407. Both are on the left side of the road. This is the first turn to the left. There is a brown wooden gate. Park your car on the right hand side of the road (there is a small parking sign). You will be met at the gate. We do not drive through the gate by car in winter. Note that we only take customers based on previous booking.

Driving instructions from Kittilä (also for those coming from Rovaniemi, Ylläs and Sodankylä direction):

Drive north towards Levi (Sirkka) skiing center some 12 km following Levintie road, (You will drive past Kittilä airport, then on top of a hill Sätkenävaara you will see a parking area on the right. As driving down the hill, slow down and look for a small road with a sign Kätkäjärventie on the left. The sign might be covered by snow in winter. If you drive under a blue skiing bridge, you have accidentally missed the turn.)

Driving instructions from Kittilä airport:

Turn left on the first T-junction and drive north in direction of Levi (Sirkka) for 6,9 km. On your way you will reach top of a hill Sätkenävaara, you will also see a parking area on the right. As driving down the hill, slow down and start looking for a small road with a sign Kätkäjärventie on the left. Both the road and the white sign will be on your left, which makes it difficult to notice. The sign might be covered by snow in winter. If you drive under a blue skiing bridge, you have accidentally missed the turn, in which case turn around and give it another try.

Then follow Kätkäjärventie road for approximately 4,25 km until you see a sign Reindeer farm and a wooden number 407. Both are on the left side of the road. This is the first turn to the left.
